Cinnamon is a spice that comes from the bark of the tree with the same name. The spice has a brownish color and a strong flavor. In the market it can be found in the form of powder or of sticks. It is mainly used in cookery and confectionery, but it is also known for its medicinal properties. Also, it is a natural food preservative. It contains fibers, calcium, iron and manganese, albeit in small amounts. In cookery, it adds flavor to drinks and liquors, to coffee and to various refreshments, to sweets such as cinnamon buns, apple pies, doughnuts, rice puddings, etc, as well as to various kinds of meat. As far as its medicinal properties are concerned, cinnamon acts as an antibiotic, it has diuretic and diaphoretic properties, it protects from ulcer, it regulates the levels of sugar in the blood and it helps digestion.
