Hawthorn is a shrub or a small tree with thorny branches and red berries and it is very common in Greece. It is also known as thorn apple, whitethorn, May-tree and hawberry. The parts that are usually used are its flowers and berries. Hawthorn is rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and procyanidins. Hawthorn is used for diseases of the heart and blood vessels such as congestive heart failure, chest pain and irregular heartbeat. It is also used to treat high blood pressure.
