Salep is a kind of orchid. A beverage is made from the bulbs of the plant. Salep is rich in starch and it contains metal salts such as phosphorous and calcium. It also contains a sticky substance, which, when boiled in water, turns into a thick mixture. Salep is beneficial in cases of coughing, asthma and stomachache. It boosts the immune system and it offers energy and mental clarity. To make a beverage, dissolve a teaspoonful of salep in a little lukewarm water. Put water in a pot; add the salep and boil - stirring the mixture all the time - in law temperature for about 10-15 minutes, till the mixture becomes thick. Add a little cinnamon and a little ginger. You can also add some sugar to make it sweeter.
